On the 14th of November 2019, the Interreg Med Plastic Busters MPAs project, the ENI CBC Med COMMON project and the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) convened a "Joint Plastic Busters workshop on creating synergies for consolidating the fight against marine litter", within the premises of the Union for the Mediterranean in Barcelona.
Attended by 39 experts from across the Mediterranean region, this meeting provided a concrete opportunity for the Interreg Med Programme and the Cross-Border Cooperation (CBC) initiative, implemented by the EU under the European Neighborhood Instrument (ENI), to get together and fully explore the potential for synergies. The end goal of the workshop was to ensure aligned and synchronized marine litter activities throughout the Mediterranean.
By bringing together key players, experts and projects from both the North and the South of the region (e.g. WES - Water and Environment Support project, BlueMed, the Beyond Plastic Med initiative, the Interreg Med Biodiversity Protection and Green Economy communities), this workshop did not only consolidate collaboration and coordination among Plastic Busters MPAs and COMMON, but also set the basis for further operational synergies, dynamic cross-fertilization and capitalization processes in order to consolidate the fight against marine litter throughout the region
As mentioned by Prof. Maria Cristina Fossi from the University of Siena, “today's objective is to fully explore the potential for synergies between projects, programs and people. Let's bring together key players from both the North and the South of the region”.
