The Plastic Busters MPAs expeditions in the Mediterranean
After a winter spent behind a desk, working on harmonizing marine litter monitoring approaches and methodologies, the arrival of spring 2019 signalled the beginning of some field work time for our researchers.
In the past few months we have been working hard to implement in the field the results of the studying phase of the project. Over the spring and summer months, harmonized methodologies for monitoring the presence of marine litter in Mediterranean pelagic and coastal MPAs and its impact on marine wildlife have been tested in the Pelagos Sanctuary, the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, the National Marine Park of Zakynthos and the Cabrera Archipelago National Maritime-Terrestrial Park.
These harmonized methodologies, once tested, fine-tuned and transferred to MPAs across the Mediterranean region, will permit shared knowledge and the consolidation of a common framework of action against marine litter in the region, thus contributing to the preservation of natural ecosystems across the Mediterranean basin.
